YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE, MY ONLY

You are my sonshine,

my lost Shoshone,

I skin a beau fleuve

in your heart

If there is tripartite,

I can’t be sure dear,

Another name for deer

is hart.

A judge lay weeping,

his robes were skewed, dear

His robes a Buff’lo

inside a park.

Inside the hair, dear,

the missing part, dear—

He turned to bread there

and there, he died.

A POEM FOR THE UNIVERSITY

1.

We were prepared to love you

Mistaking the monastery

For the master’s footsteps,

So silent and so gone now.

You were only a boot

On an untethered animal

Grazing in Veritas pasture,

Near those trailers where you housed

Passion & Ecstasy,

Your part-time instructors.

Oh, but those in the highest robes,

In the throes of the Holy Orders:

The Woolf scholar,

Pulling Virginia still down,

Down into the river,

Ophelia sister, wishful incest;

Or New History,

Making you pay with her hands of ash;

Dr. Poetics, fleeing Mao’s ghost inside the end of English,

A suicide himself,

In the fur coat of the Republican Party …

Prithee, Prithee—

Could it?

Marry! Zounds!!

Oh—

Drink to me only with thine …

& I will & I will pledge …

“Apocrypha.”

“David Herbert Lawrence was born in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, in 1885, fourth of the five children of a miner and his middle-class wife … His first novel, The White Peacock, was published in 1911, just a few weeks after the death of his mother to whom he had been abnormally close …”

So what was her middle-class name?
